Volunteering and the CFC

A woman and boy serve foodIn addition to monetary pledges, Federal employees have the opportunity to give volunteer time to participating CFC charities. When you sign up to volunteer, you can have an even greater impact for your chosen charities. For example, during the 2023 CFC, the value of 83,000 volunteer hours pledged by generous Federal employees added $2 million to the CFC's monetary total.

Federal employees represent a strong, caring community who already demonstrate a commitment to giving back through their public service. Pledging volunteer hours through the CFC takes this a step further and allows you to provide much needed hands-on support to the causes that mean the most to you and your family.

Don't let your physical location limit you. Are you great at social media? Design? Building websites? Accounting? Writing? Many charities offer virtual volunteer opportunities that allow you to put your skills to good use even when you can't be there in person.

How it Works

  1. Simply look for charities that accept volunteer hours in the online charity search by checking the box to search for charities with volunteer opportunities. Or, you can use the PDF version of the charity list where charities with volunteer opportunities will be identified by a raised-hand icon. You can also download and sort this spreadsheet to learn more about some of the types of volunteer opportunities charities offer.
  2. Then enter the number of TOTAL hours you want to give over the course of the year when you complete your pledge.
  3. If you would like to be contacted by the charity, opt to release your contact information.
  4. If you do not want to release your contact information, you may also reach out to the charity to learn about the in-person or virtual volunteer options.
  5. Log back into your CFC Online Giving account throughout the year to record the number of volunteer hours completed.

Group Volunteering

Agencies, installations, offices, or Federal employee groups can organize group volunteer projects. Find a CFC-participating organization in your local area that accepts volunteer hours and contact them about setting up a project. Record your group's volunteer project through the CFC by clicking the "Submit Group Volunteer Pledges" button in the CFC's Online Giving System.  Whether you clean trash out of a local waterway, distribute food to the hungry in your community, tutor elementary school students, or many other worthwhile activities, the members of your group will feel happy when they GIVE HAPPY through volunteering.
